The Chinese were the first to make gunpowder, invent the magnetic compass, and
introduce to the world the art of making paper. About 2000 years ago, the
Chinese made gunpowder by mixing sulphur and saltpetre. The Chinese were also
the first to discover that a narrow magnet floating in a bowl of water would
always point to the north. This groundbreaking discovery led to the invention
of the magnetic compass, a device that helped sailors navigate safely when they
were out of sight of land. During the 2nd century, the Chinese invented the art
of making paper using vegetable pulp. This invention spread from China to
Arabia, then to Spain and Europe, revolutionizing the way knowledge was
recorded and shared. In course of time, paper factories came into existence.
Additionally, the Chinese are credited with the invention of printing with
movable types. Before this invention, books were painstakingly written by hand,
making them rare and expensive. These four great inventions—gunpowder, the
compass, papermaking, and printing—stand as a testament to China’s early
contributions to science, technology, and global civilization.
